Ply Gem Sliding & Patio Doors: The Homestead Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ply Gem-compatible rollers, handles, latches, weatherstripping, and track repair kits for sliding and patio doors throughout Homestead, and most jobs run between $85 and $320 installed, depending on which part failed and whether the track needs work. The typical call starts the same way: a door that was gliding fine for years now takes a shoulder to move, or a handle that finally snapped off in someone’s hand. Most owners don’t know the exact part name. That is our job, not yours.

Call (448) 428-7290

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ply Gem, which matters because it means we install the correct replacement instead of whatever a distributor happens to have in stock. If your door is binding, grinding, sagging, or leaving a gap at the latch, we can usually identify the failed part over the phone and bring it on the first trip. Dale Kessler, who runs TruePane out of Homestead, grew up in Naranja a few miles north of here, and he has spent enough years replacing South Florida door hardware to know that salt air and sliding doors are not friendly to each other.

Which Ply Gem Models This Applies To

Ply Gem has built sliding doors under a few different series names over the years, and the part that fits one series frequently does not fit another. The most common lines we see in Homestead homes are the Ply Gem 1500 Series, the Ply Gem Premium Vinyl Sliding Door, and the older CertainTeed sliding doors that Ply Gem absorbed when it bought the brand. CertainTeed-era doors are the ones that catch people: the door says CertainTeed on the glass etch or the frame sticker, but the replacement parts now come through Ply Gem channels. If your door was installed before 2010 and says CertainTeed, tell us that when you call, because the roller assemblies are a different housing size than the newer Ply Gem production.

How to identify what you have: open the door and look at the sticker on the top rail or the side jamb. It will show a series number or a manufacturing code that starts with a letter-and-number string. If the sticker is gone (and in Florida, after ten summers, it usually is), we measure the roller housing width and the wheel diameter. Ply Gem rollers commonly run 1-1/4 inch or 1-1/2 inch wheels in a stamped steel or stainless housing, and the wrong width will either not fit the track or will tilt the door and chew up the bottom rail. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Ply Gem, we prefer OEM rollers and handles when they are available, because the track tolerances are tight. For weatherstripping and latch hardware, quality aftermarket works fine and costs less. We will tell you which is which before we order anything.

Signs Your Ply Gem Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing

  • You have to lift the handle to get the door to roll. This means the rollers have worn flat on one side, or the adjustment screws at the bottom of the door have backed out. The door is dragging on the track instead of riding on the wheels. Continued use shaves down the track itself.
  • The door sticks in July but rolls fine in January. Vinyl-framed Ply Gem doors expand in Homestead’s summer heat. If the frame was set too tight against the rough opening, thermal expansion binds the panel. This is an installation adjustment, not a parts failure, but it will kill the rollers faster if left alone.
  • There is a visible gap at the bottom or top of the closed door. The interlock weatherstripping has compressed, or the rollers have dropped on one side. You are losing conditioned air and gaining insects, which Homestead homeowners know means mosquitoes by April.
  • The handle flops or the key cylinder spins without engaging. The internal lock mechanism is a pot-metal casting in many Ply Gem handles, and the spline wears out. You can wiggle the handle and feel the slack. It is a $40 to $90 fix with the right replacement, not a new door.
  • You hear a grinding or metal-on-metal sound when you slide the door. The roller bearings have failed and the wheel is not turning. It is scoring the track. The longer it runs, the more likely the track needs replacement instead of a simple roller swap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Homestead homes, installed Ply Gem sliding door parts repair generally runs this way:

  • Roller assembly replacement (both sides, door removed and reset): $165 to $285
  • Handle and lock replacement (interior and exterior, keyed or unkeyed): $85 to $165
  • Track repair or replacement (aluminum track section, re-set level): $140 to $320
  • Weatherstripping replacement (full perimeter, interlock and sweep): $95 to $180

The range depends on whether your door is a 5-foot single slide or an 8-foot patio door, and whether the track is salvageable. We quote the part and the labor separately on paper, so you see exactly what you are buying, and the labor carries our Done Right Promise. If it is not done right, we make it right, no paperwork, no arguing. A note on the track: if a Homestead door has been dragging on blown-out rollers for years, the anodized track groove is often worn through to raw aluminum. We will tell you if the track is gone, and we will not sell you rollers that will just grind themselves down again.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: inspect the track for debris, vacuum out the bottom rail, and check whether the adjustment screws are present and if the door sits level. If the door is lifting, lowering, or moving when you turn those screws, the rollers are functioning and the problem is elsewhere. If the door will not lift, the rollers have come off the track inside the frame, and that requires pulling the door panel out of the opening.

That is where most people get hurt or damage the door. A sliding glass patio door panel in a Homestead home weighs 80 to 150 pounds depending on size and glass package. One person cannot safely remove and reset it without risking the glass, their back, or the frame. When a Ply Gem panel comes out of its track, the rollers are under the full weight of the panel, and the adjustment housings are easy to strip if you force them. If the door is binding, grinding, or sitting low on one side, call us at (448) 428-7290. We will bring the right rollers, check the track, and set the door so it glides with one hand.

What Neighbors Say About TruePane Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"Our bay window had rotted at the sill and two other outfits wanted to talk us into a flat picture window instead. TruePane rebuilt the opening and matched the original look. Neighbors have knocked on the door about it."

GGene A.
★★★★★

"French doors to the patio, custom size because this house was built in 1961 and nothing is standard. Measured twice, three weeks to fabricate like they warned, and the install day they laid runners over my floors without being asked."

MMarie S.
★★★★★

"Whole-house window replacement at 71 years old is not something you want to do twice. Dale walked the house himself for the quote. Crew was the same three men all four days, and the foreman knew every window by room."

PPat and Ray L.
★★★★★

"Impact windows on the whole house. They handled the permit, the inspection, and gave me a folder with every approval number for the insurance company. My windstorm premium dropped enough to notice."

BBill T.
★★★★

"Sliding door had been dragging for years. They quoted a repair first, said the track was shot, then priced the replacement both ways on paper. No pressure either direction. Door glides with one finger now."

CCarol M.
★★★★★

"Eleven windows replaced in two days. The crew chief, Marcus, showed me the level on every single frame before they caulked it. My wife noticed the street noise was gone before I did."

RRonald P.
★★★★

"Storm door and a new back entry door. Small job, but they treated it like one that mattered. Screws in the hinges are stainless, the sweep actually seals, and the invoice matched the phone quote to the dollar."

VVernon H.
★★★★

"Had fog between the panes in four windows. They explained the seals had failed and argon was long gone, replaced the glass units instead of selling me whole windows. Honest outfit."
