PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The Homestead Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install PGT sliding and patio door parts throughout Homestead, from replacement rollers and handles to full door systems. Installed part replacement typically runs $145 to $485 depending on the component, while full PGT slider replacement in Homestead usually lands between $1,800 and $4,200 with labor included. Most part-level fixes are completed the same visit. The way most Homestead owners discover a failing PGT door part is gradual: the door starts dragging mid-track, the handle goes loose in the hand, or the lock stops catching cleanly. By the time you’re searching for parts, the door has usually been telling you something for weeks.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds sliding and patio doors across three main product lines we see regularly in Homestead: the 5500 Series (aluminum frame, standard in older South Florida homes), the 7700 Series (heavier extruded aluminum, common in impact-rated applications), and the WinGuard line (PGT’s impact-rated system, which Homestead building code requires in many newer builds). Each series uses different roller assemblies, so a 5500 roller will not seat properly in a 7700 track. The quickest way to identify your model is the label on the door’s top or bottom rail, or a sticker on the interior frame edge near the handle. If the sticker is gone, we can match the part from a photo of the roller, lock, or handle plus the door’s weight and track width. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: PGT’s factory parts are well made, but for rollers we often recommend Prime-Line or similar quality aftermarket assemblies that use stainless steel bearings rather than PGT’s older nylon-wheel design, which wears flat in Homestead’s humidity and salt air. For locks and handles, we stay OEM whenever possible because mix-matched handle sets frequently leave the door out of square.
Signs Your PGT Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door drags or grinds mid-track. This is almost always a flattened roller wheel or a roller housing that has popped out of the track. PGT’s older rollers used a nylon wheel that flattens against the aluminum track after 5 to 10 years of daily use, especially when silt from Homestead’s sandy soil finds its way into the track.
- The handle turns but the latch won’t catch. The internal lock cam in PGT handle sets wears down over time, but more often in Homestead we see the strike plate shift because the door slab has settled or the frame has flexed in the heat. Adjusting the strike or replacing the lock cam usually solves it.
- The door is hard to lift or feels heavy. When rollers bind up, the door weight shifts onto the track edges and the panel starts riding on the frame instead of the wheels. Left alone, this grooves the aluminum track permanently and turns a $40 roller replacement into a track replacement.
- Drafts or daylight around the door edge. PGT door weatherstripping and pile seals shrink and crack in South Florida’s UV exposure. On swing-style PGT patio doors the threshold sweep is usually the first thing to go; on sliders it is the vertical pile seal along the frame edge.
- The door rattles in wind or makes a whistling sound. Loose roller adjustment screws let the panel bounce between the track rails, and worn interlock seals (the spot where both panels meet) whistle during afternoon storms. Both are quick part fixes if caught before the panel starts wearing the frame.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is what we quote most often for PGT sliding and patio door parts in Homestead:
| Part or Service | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Roller assembly replacement (per panel) | $145 - $260 |
| Handle and lock set (OEM PGT) | $190 - $340 |
| Weatherstripping / pile seal replacement (full door) | $120 - $240 |
| Track repair or replacement | $280 - $485 |
| Full PGT slider replacement (installed) | $1,800 - $4,200 |
The range comes down to parts: OEM PGT hardware costs more than quality aftermarket, and impact-rated WinGuard components run higher than 5500 Series parts. Every quote includes the part, the labor, and cleanup, written as a line-item estimate before any work begins. The Keystone Standard applies here too: both manufacturer warranty layers registered in writing, durations stated, and our Done Right Promise covers the workmanship. If the part fails inside 90 days because we installed it wrong, we fix it. No paperwork fight.
DIY or Call Us?
Some PGT part work is safe to inspect on your own. You can clean the track, check for visible flat spots on the rollers, and tighten a loose handle with a screwdriver. Beyond that, we recommend a trained professional. PGT slider panels start around 80 pounds and WinGuard impact panels can exceed 180 pounds. Lifting a loaded panel over a lip to swap bottom rollers without scratching the track or pinching a finger is not a first-time project. High-tension components, spring-loaded interlock assemblies, and impact-rated frame anchors should never be removed by hand. A failed PGT part is not a safety hazard if you leave it alone and stop using the door. But a half-finished repair with a panel off its track is. If your Homestead door is binding, dragging, or not locking, call us at (448) 428-7290. We will match the part, bring it with us, and install it the same visit in most cases.
FAQs
Rollers last 5 to 12 years in Homestead’s climate depending on use and how often the track is cleaned. Handles and locks typically last 10 to 15 years. Weatherstripping and seals usually need replacing every 3 to 6 years because South Florida sun and salt air break down the material. If your PGT door is over a decade old and still on original rollers, you are on borrowed time. Call (448) 428-7290 for an exact diagnosis, and we will tell you which parts are worn and which still have life in them.
Some parts can be repaired: bent strike plates can be reshaped, loose roller adjustment screws can be tightened, and a sticking lock cam can sometimes be cleaned and lubricated. But flattened roller wheels, cracked lock cams, and brittle weatherstripping are replacement items. We will always tell you which one you have before quoting the job.
Most roller, handle, and weatherstripping replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. Track replacement or full panel removal and reinstallation can run 2 to 3 hours. We come with the parts on the truck, so there is no second appointment left hanging. Call (448) 428-7290 for a free estimate and we will give you a straight answer on timing.
We keep the most common PGT roller assemblies, handle sets, lock cams, and weatherstripping in our Homestead shop and on our service trucks. Less common WinGuard components may need 2 to 5 business days to order from PGT. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with PGT, and we also stock parts for Andersen, and Pella lines. When you call, we will confirm whether your part is on hand before we schedule the visit.
